Young woman student walking past library.CSNL 50: Introduction to College

What is it?

Counseling 50 (CSNL 50) is a 1-unit orientation course that new students take before or during their first quarter at Foothill. The 12-hour course usually meets just three times. To find a course time that fits your schedule, see the searchable schedule of classes.

What's in it for me?

Counseling 50 will expose you to many of the resources our counselors have to help you succeed in college. You'll learn valuable information about:

  • degree programs,
  • transfer courses,
  • college policies,
  • student services such as health services and financial aid,
  • using the library effectively, and
  • time management skills.

When you take CNSL 50 during your first quarter at Foothill, you'll qualify for early registration for the next quarter. This improves your chances at getting into your first-choice classes before they fill up.

What happens if I don't take it?

California requires that all community college students receive a college orientation. At Foothill, we use Counseling 50 to meet this requirement. If you don't take CNSL 50 a registration hold will be put on your student record for future quarters. To have the hold removed, you must meet with a Foothill counselor. To schedule a counseling appointment, visit meetcounselor.hereweb.com or phone 650-949-7423.

Are there any exemptions?

You may be exempt from the course if you have verifiable proof that you have completed an orientation course at another college; completed 12 or more college units; or are enrolling only in recreational classes.
